Life Story for Max Weiss

Maximilian (Max) Johann Weiss was born on May 25, 1934 in Schwandorf Germany. The eldest child of Maria and Michael Weiss. His father died when Max was a young boy so he was brought up by his mother together with his 3 brothers, Adi, Franz and Helmut, and sister Hedwig, in the difficult post World War II era. He left Germany for Canada in 1955, a day after his 21st birthday. Early on, he worked for Eaton's selling tickets at the Eaton's Theater in Toronto. Later he worked for BP Clarkson Refinery in logistics. Max was an accomplished competitive springboard diver, earning the first alternate spot at the Canadian Olympic trials. He enjoyed entertaining audiences at Sunnyside pool in Toronto, as a clown diver, to earn extra income, where he met his wife Vera. Later under the advice of his father in law, he returned to his studies at the University of Toronto and upon completion started teaching at Mimico High School in Etobicoke, ON, eventually assuming the role of Assistant Department Head in Business Education. During his time there Max was actively involved with mentoring the student council for many years. In addition he took on duties as Night School Principal and for a period of time ran a German School on weekends. He then taught in the adult re-entry program at Burnhamthorpe Collegiate Institute (BCI) until his retirement. Max was an avid gardener and his retirement allowed him to spend more time tending to his spectacular Rhododendron garden, and landscaping his backyard oasis. The family wishes to thank his neighbours and team of caregivers who supported Max in his final years.
