Obituary for Frieda Pakrul

FRIEDA WILHELMINE PAKRUL (nee Utz)
April 29, 1923 - March 31, 2018

FRIEDA WILHELMINE PAKRUL (nee Utz) passed away in Burlington, Ontario on March 31, 2018 in her 95th year.
Pre-deceased in 2016 by Herbert Pakrul, her loving husband for over 71 years.
Survived by children David (Sandra), Diane (David) and Robert (Mary), grandchildren Ian (Heidi), Margaret (Matt), Tammy and Stephanie, and great-grandchildren Patrick, Natalie, Carolyn, Samantha, Ryan and Keira. Pre-deceased by her siblings Arthur, Erma and Helen. Loved and missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends in the Port Colborne, Mississauga and Oakville areas.
Born in 1923 on the family farm near Port Colborne, Ontario, Frieda survived many serious childhood illnesses and as a teenager joined her siblings to work at the local shoe factory. She was courted by her eventual husband, Herb, at the Lutheran Church they both attended, and the church remained central to their family and community throughout their lives. They were married shortly after the end of World War II upon Herb’s return from military service overseas.
Frieda served as the full-time homemaker as they raised their family in Port Colborne surrounded by many relatives and friends. Indeed, during this time Frieda and her two sisters Erma and Helen enjoyed the blessing of also living as next-door neighbours - i.e. - instant babysitting. If all else failed, Grandma’s house was just down the street, on the corner.
The family moved to the Mississauga area in 1965 when Herb took up a new business position. Although Frieda missed the company of her extended family, she began to enjoy many leisure activities with new friends, including golf, curling and bridge. Near the end of Herb’s business career, they moved briefly to Vancouver, and later in retirement to Oakville and finally to Burlington. They also travelled extensively but continued to focus on, and enjoy the company of, family and friends. It is fair to say that Frieda started her life as a reluctant traveller but ended up criss-crossing the globe many times on their various excursions.
There will be a memorial service at Christ Our King Lutheran Church, 2150 Dundas Street W. Mississauga on Saturday May 5, 2018 at 11 am.
Cremation and private interment have been arranged through Skinner & Middlebrook Funeral Home, Mississauga, Ontario.
The family wishes to express our sincere thanks to the caring and compassionate staff at Lakeshore Place Retirement Residence in Burlington.
