Helen Doris (Vickers) Yankowy, born on February 6, 1926, was the youngest of five children born to Ada (Morris) Vickers and George Vickers Sr.
At the age of 89, after a thirteen-year battle with Breast Cancer, Helen passed away at St Joseph’s Hospital at 10:30 PM on Dec 2, 2015.
Helen Doris Yankowy was predeceased by:
Her Husband Alek Yankowy, her Mother Ada (Morris) Vickers- Bleasdale and her father George Vickers Sr
Sisters: Ada (Vickers) McKenzie, Lillian May (Vickers) White, Margaret (Vickers) Maskivitch and brother George Vickers Jr.
Helen will be deeply missed by her Daughter Darlene (Yankowy) Hickman, Son-in-law Bevil (Bev) Hickman, and Grandson, Michael John Emery.
Helen was a child of the Great Depression, which left its mark on her life.
Helen worked at Mercury Mills and rose quickly to the role of supervisor pursed perfection in ensuring each parachute made for the troops fighting the war was perfect. She instilled pride in doing a good job into her staff and colleagues.
Helen was the first to step up when one of her workers had a “Blue Baby” and she inspired them to do extra piecework to raise the necessary money for procedures required to save the child’s life.
Helen worked with her husband in all their of their business endeavors, until 1966, when she moved into retail at Sayvettes, Towers, Lansing, until she finally retired from Home Hardware Sherway Gardens in 1991.
Helen was a voracious reader who spent her retirement reading and with friends at The Seniors Center, in Square One, who will greatly miss her.
